Blend Your Juice

Juicing! Its all the rage…and can have many health benefits if incorporated into your life correctly.  Juices at trendy juice shops can be quite pricey at anywhere between $6- $15 a pop!  I don’t know about you, but spending $11 on a green juice seems like a lot to me!  So if you’re really into your daily healthy juice, buying a juicer can satisfying your addiction and save you money.  I’ve never owned a juicer… I have looked into it but every time I enter the black hole of juicer research I wind up confused and no closer to figuring out what I want.  And honestly, I always think back to what other juicer-owning friends have told me in the past:
they are messy and often more of a pain to deal with than anything else
….AND they take up a lot of space in your kitchen!  Which is why I’ve always passed on investing in one.
So I decided to start blending my juices instead- technically they aren’t “juices” and more of a smoothie, but I gave it a try.  It turns out, after I did a little research, that blending your “juice” actually delivers more vitamins, fibers and nutrients to your body than juicing does!  SCORE!
 Ok let me explain…when you use a juicer, you juice you’re fruits and vegetables until they are drained of liquid and you are left with the skin and the pulp.  The thing is, the skins and pulp of fruits and veggies holds all of the fiber and a lot of nutrients- so when you juice, you get rid of that…and why would you want to get rid of that?  I guess getting rid of the pulp and fiber yields you a smoother beverage, but I want that fiber…so, personally I’m willing to drink a more “smoothie” like juice in order to get all that good stuff.  More nutrients will make your skin glowing and vibrant, and keeping the fiber in your juice will keep you full and satisfied longer while also keeping…things moving…if you know what I mean.
NOW, don’t go throwing your juice/smoothie ingredients in any old broke down blender!  You need one that does the job and can blend veggies successfully.  I use a Vitamix and love it.  It’s definitely an investment because this baby is not cheap.  I bought it with gift cards we had left over from returned wedding gifts, so I was able to rationalize it a bit- but I am SO happy it’s in my life!  Whatever blender you decide to invest in, do your research!
In my “blended juices” I like to use: spinach, carrot, beets, grapefruit, orange, blueberries, apples, ginger, lemon, raspberries, parsley…not necessarily all together, but in whatever concoction you like! KEEP THE SKINS ON!!! Thats where fiber lives, and you don’t want to throw out that nutritional gold.

    Hey, do you have any juice recipes to recommend. I’m just starting to make my own juice and I would like to find a few different recipes that I can consistently enjoy.

      Yes I do! I will be posting a few soon, but to hold you over, a favorite of mine is a blended green juice: 1/2 cup water, 1 cup spinach, 1/2 green apple, 1/2 cup sliced cucumber, juice of half a lemon, 1/4 inch of grated ginger..blend very well- it will be pulp-y, but super healthy!
