So, if you read my last post, you know how I feel about too much sugar. I’m actively trying to cut back on sugar at all meals. I usually always have a protein shake for breakfast..and I usually put banana or other fruits in them to make them sweet and filling. SO you can imagine my dilemma when I realized my protein shakes were filled with sugars!!
[ Filled with fructose sugars, but still…it was a sugar bomb first thing in the morning ]
Making a plain old protein shake is SOOO boring…I needed to find something to add flavor without adding sugar or extra calories…so I came up with my Lemon Cookie Protein Shake.
It seriously tastes like a lemon bar in liquid form. Whenever I make it, Ben wants to steal a sip. I use protein powders that are high protein, low calorie and low sugar. Most powders now have very little sugar content, but check yours out just to make sure. I use Vega for this and it has 3g per scoop…try not to go over 5g per scoop.
Unsweetened vanilla almond milk makes it creamy, fresh lemon zest adds brightness and flavor and almond extract is that little secret weapon ingredient that makes it all come together in a sweet, dessert-like bomb.
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/4 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon almond extract (I have also used vanilla extract in this and its amazing too!)
4-5 ice cubes
Place all ingredients into your blender, except the ice. Blend on low to medium for 20 seconds, then add ice, and blend on high for another 30 seconds or so until all ice is crushed and the shake is creamy/slushy. Thats it!! SIMPLE AS LEMON PIE!
I swear you wont miss the sugar in this one!
