How I Get in My Best Shape Fast For a Role

Alright.

I’m just going to get to the point here….

I booked a new movie that I start shooting this week and for the next three weeks.  But here is the kicker:  I will be wearing a bikini, skimpy clothes and my underwear in a bunch of scenes.

So I gotta prep.  I thought this was a good opportunity to explain how I do that.  How I prep with a short amount of time- how I get in bikini shape stat.  Because I have had to do it A LOT.

I want to start by saying that I love the way I look.  I am happy with my body, BUT there is a huge difference between being happy with how I look in a bikini hanging out at a friends pool and how I look on camera for a movie in a bikini or my underwear.

The difference is significant.  And if you aren’t an actor or model, you may not fully understand…but imagine if you all of a sudden had to be ready to be filmed half naked for something that people can watch basically forever.  Are you starting to feel panicked?  Probably!  It’s stressful!

I keep my body in great shape all year round because I am NOT a fan of “seasonal fitness”  and being fit and healthy makes me feel amazing.  But when I need to hunker down and get ready for a part, I have a game plan.  It sort of sucks, but it doesn’t last super long and best of all it really really works.

It’s also not the type of thing I can maintain for longer than a month.  I mean, I guess I could.…but I wouldn’t want to and I never have.  It’s something I do when I need to, then I go back to normal healthy lifestyle eating that makes me feel happy and balanced!

Here we go!

So, I’ve been eating super super clean the past week and cut out all alcohol and junk.  Junk being: pretzels, trail mix, processed carbs, cereal, chips etc….anything that isn’t natural.  I stick to protein and veggies mostly.

What I have been eating is as follows:

  • Egg white omelettes with steamed spinach
  • PROTEIN SHAKES
  • RX bars as snacks
  • Salads with olive oil and lemon
  • Plain grilled chicken breast with a little salt, pepper and garlic powder
  • Simple broiled salmon or Salmon Cakes <–THE BEST!!
  • Sashimi (no rice) with a big salad and a teensy bit or low sodium soy sauce
  • Roasted brussel sprouts
  • Cauliflower rice

I drink a TON of water also.  Keeping hydrated is the key!!  If you are hydrated, your body won’t start confusing thirst for hunger, which happens a lot.  I drink a lot of sodium free sparkling water and tea at night (instead of wine!)

AND I am currently doing a 3 day juice cleanse to shake things up real fast (EEEEKKKK) !!

If you have been following my blog, you probably know that I hate….wait, no….strongly dislike juice cleanses.  I don’t say hate because I know they have great cleansing benefits and are also a great way to reset your body and mind- its a mental challenge that tests your will power.  And you all know I LOVE a challenge.  But a juice cleanse challenge is not really my jam.

I love to eat, the act of chewing is satisfying to me.  You can’t chew a juice, so that’s the first knock against it.

I also just feel sad when I juice cleanse.  I’m probably just thinking about food too much (lol) but I don’t know…. I just feel deprived- not hungry, but just left out, you know?

 You know when you want to do something and then someone tells you you can’t do it…so you want to do it more?  That’s basically how I feel every moment during a juice cleanse.  

I’ve also NEVER completed a whole juice cleanse without breaking a rule.  This time included.  I can’t give up my morning coffee.  And do I care?  NOPE.  Drinking the damn coffee anyway because I neeeed it!  I also will have a handful of raw almonds if I feel light headed, or any type of “off”.

I am doing it because the shooting schedule changed last minute (GRRR) and I wanted a quick fix.  When I juice, my stomach looks super flat, and my muscles look more defined (because of water loss and “cleansing benefits”).  And I have zero tummy troubles and no bloat.  So it works.  For 3 days I will do it and then I will go back to eating super clean for the remainder of the shoot.  I will work in 1 “cheat meal” a week.  Nothing too crazy, but I will have a glass of wine and a turkey burger or something like that…just so I don’t lose my mind!

Doing a juice cleanse also allows me to cleanse my body and prepare to eat super clean for the rest of the month.  It’s like a little jump start!

As for workouts- I do a lot of high intensity training, running and pilates.  A mix of intense cardio and strength moves is what works best for my body.

I will often do double workouts.  For instance, I will take a class at Barry’s Bootcamp in the morning and then go on a hike later in the day.  OR I will do a HIIT class followed by an intense pilates reformer class (there are so many great studios here in LA that are totally killer).  OR pilates, then a hike.  OR a run and a yoga sculpt class.  A balance of calorie burn and strength.

Every night (almost), I will also do an ab series!!  When I do it every night, I see amazing results when paired with super clean eating.  Try this one I created!

    Thank you so much for this post! It’s so refreshing to see an actor be brutally honest about the work that goes into being fit and camera-ready. I can’t even count the number of interviews I’ve read where celebrities claim to stay in shape just by “drinking a lot of water” or something equally unrealistic. Thank you for being so candid about what actually goes into prepping for a role like this. Congratulations on the movie, and good luck over the next few weeks!

    Girl. I was just writing up recently what I do to drop weight quickly too! Honestly I dislike it too and I hate explaining to non entertainment business people how his is not anti-feminist or an eating disorder. That it’s honestly a requirement of the job and the look sometimes.
    Mad respect girl. Go get em!

    Ps- if you’re dying I love a bone broth w/ lemon, garlic, pink salt, and rosemary. Feels like a cheat 😉

    Love how real you keep it, you work hard and the hustling pays off! Hope the shoot went well!
    Out of curiosity, do you keep up with two a days when you’re on the cleanse? I despise juice cleansing because I have a hard time keeping up with high intensity classes, so I end up stopping exercise:/ I know everyone is different, but I’m curious how you deal with that. xo

      Hi Nina! Thank you!!
      I do not keep up with two a days on juice cleanse days!! Too much for me. On a juice cleanse, I still stay active, but in a way more moderate way. I will do yoga, a megaformer pilate class or a hike- something that feels doable without making me too spent, you know? I leave the HIIT classes and doubles for when I am eating solid foods! XOXO
