8 glasses of water a day. We’ve all heard this, like a hundred thousand times. But the amount you drink should probably more if you lead an active lifestyle. To properly hydrate your body and your muscles, you need to drink water, lots of it, and NOT just during a workout.
To hydrate properly, you need to drink water BEFORE, DURING & AFTER a workout!
Hydration is one of the most important parts of a fitness routine. If you’re not properly hydrated, or if you don’t hydrate well during a workout, you won’t perform as well and to be honest, you’ll feel pretty shitty. If you start a workout dehydrated, your body will be playing catch up the whole time, resulting in poorer performance and slower results in the long run!
Once you finish a workout, your body is still burning calories for hours after, especially if you did weight-bearing exercise, so it’s also important to keep on chugging throughout the day post-workout. Water will help your muscles repair quickly and will ward off any cramping that could happen. Have you ever had one of those foot cramps during a workout class?! Thats from lack of hydration!!
About an hour before I workout, I’ll drink a full bottle of water. During the workout, I usually finish a full bottle, then fill it up post workout and drink a half bottle more. Then through the day, I keep hydrating frequently. In fact, there are very few times you’ll see me out and about sans-water bottle.
Another thing to keep in mind- often when you feel hungry, you may be mistaking hunger for thirst. So as a rule of thumb, swig some water when you feel a snack attack coming on and wait about 10 minutes before deciding if you are actually still hungry. Most of the time the answer will be no.
Plus, staying well hydrated will also:
Make your skin glow
Help you digest food better
Keep you energized
Help flush toxins from your body
Some people claim to just not enjoy the taste of water. To me, it’s just a blank canvas and I love that….but if you fall into the group that just doesn’t like it, try flavoring your water naturally. When I want to jazz up my water, either at home or in my water bottle, I add some sliced cucumbers, lemons, and/or mint. A mix of all three of those is my personal favorite. It makes the water very refreshing and adds just enough flavor to take it from boring to delish!
