I remember the first time I heard about Hyaluronic acid. It sounded like a magical potion from some fairy tale universe. I was having martinis at Dear Irving in NYC with my friend Ashli and started discussing our favorite skin care products…because we are both product junkies and NEED to know what each other are loving. When she told me about hyaluronic acid, I knew I needed it in my life.
OK, so heres what it is:
Scientifically- hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan: molecule composed partly of sugars. Hyaluronic acid is a natural structural part of your skin and is present in connective tissue all throughout your body.
The magical part of hyaluronic acid lies in its ability to retain moisture. In fact, it’s able to hold a great capacity of moisture than any other polymer (natural or synthetic). This is totally crazy, but ONE GRAM of hyaluronic acid is able to hold up to six liters of water!!! So by adding this ingredient into your beauty regimen, you are guaranteed to see more moisturized, supple skin.
As we age, and we all do…our skin loses moisture, resulting in a loss of firmness and suppleness. So by using hyaluronic acid, you will fight the signs of aging skin and keep skin looking young and fresh.
Hyaluronic acid can improve your skin’s moisture content, as I have explained above…but it can also strengthen skin’s barrier (outer layers) at the same time. So, you get an immediate plump fresh appearance of the skin, while also strengthening the outer layers…WIN WIN!
Its a super easy product to incorporate into your skin care regimen and a great way to hydrate your skin for a youthful glow. Its as light as water and absorbs right into your skin- I use it after I cleanse and before I apply moisturizer.
To apply, pour some into your handed then lightly tap into your face…if I am feeling a little extra dry or in need of a skin boost, I’ll repeat this another time. Wait until it absorbs before applying lotion.
There are also face masks (single use and multiple use options) and spa treatments that use hyaluronic acid to moisturize and plump skin.
Of course, a with all skin care products, always do a patch test before using- to rule out any allergies!
Here are some of my favorite products that contain the magic potion- shop your way to fresher, more youthful skin!
